Paul Appleton

Paul studied science as an undergraduate at the University of Reading, where he came face to face with a scanning electron microscope. That experience sparked a fascination with microscopy that has taken him to university biology departments in Aberystwyth, Glasgow, Liverpool and finally Dundee. He has carried out microscopy-based projects in a variety of fields including marine biology, parasitology, ophthalmology and now cancer research.

On the importance of images, he says: "Having spent almost five years in Dundee carrying out microscopy-based research of colon cancer, I have not lost my enthusiasm for working with images. It is always a great feeling to see something that no one else has ever seen before or to discover something that contributes towards our knowledge of a disease like colon cancer. There is something intensely satisfying about being able to see something."
