Ivor Mason

Ivor is a Professor of Developmental Biology and Assistant Director of the MRC Centre for Developmental Neurobiology at King's College London. He took a degree in zoology at Oxford, which led to his decision to focus on developmental biology. He came to the Guy's Campus in 1990 as a lecturer in molecular biology within the Division of Anatomy in the Medical School and has remained there, now part of King's College. He has also served for eight years on the Committee of the British Society for Developmental Biology.

He says: "My inspiration to become a biologist came from my O-level teacher, a co-author of the 'Atlas of...' series of books, including, notably in the context of the image and my teaching, 'An Atlas of Histology'." His winning image has come from his histology teaching at King's, but the research of his group focuses upon how instructive signalling by growth factors serves to 'sculpt' the developing brain.
