The creators of these winning images used a handful of microscopic techniques, as well as photography and illustration.
High-resolution episcopic microscopy (HREM) is a relatively new technique developed by combining a light microscope and a microtome (equipment used to cut thin histological sections) to produce a unique device that has changed the way histological specimens are imaged, increasing clarity and structural information of various tissues.
