Electron microscopy

The creators of these winning images used a handful of microscopic techniques, as well as photography and illustration.

Electron microscopy

Electron microscopes use a beam of electrons rather than photons of light to generate images from their subjects. There are two types: scanning and transmission electron microscopes. The scanner bounces electrons off the surface of a solid sample whereas the transmission passes electrons through a thin section to gather information.
