Peter Maloca

Peter works in Lucerne, Switzerland, as an ophthalmologist and eye surgeon at the Hirslanden Clinic and is also a research fellow in the University of Basel’s Department of Ophthalmology, where he and his supervisor, Pascal Hasler, established an optical coherence tomography (OCT) laboratory. The lab focuses on macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and eye tumours. With Cyrill Gyger, Peter developed a new method for improving medical imaging and developed new OCT scanners for university research and for use at patients’ homes, to improve the detection, treatment and monitoring of retinal diseases. He and his team have developed 3D visualisation of the retina and in 2015 presented the world’s first 3DOCT IMAX film. Peter has founded a professional information exchange platform for ophthalmologists, has produced educational games for medical students and ophthalmologists, and organises annual OCT congresses for ophthalmologists.
