Mark Bartley

Mark is a previous Wellcome Image Award winner, wowing the judges in 2015 with his image of a patient with kyphosis.

Mark studied photography, video and digital imaging at the University of Sunderland and also has an MSc, a British Institute of Professional Photography (BIPP) qualification in medical illustration and a professional membership with the Institute of Medical Illustrators (IMI).

Starting his medical photography career in 2001 at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, in 2003 Mark was appointed Senior Medical Photographer at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge. His daily work involves clinical, ophthalmic and public relations photography and videography.

Mark has presented and published papers discussing ultraviolet photography and had his work exhibited at the Royal Photographic Society’s ‘Visualising Medicine’ exhibition, which took place in May 2014. He has also won gold awards at the IMI annual exhibitions on three occasions, in 2008, 2010 and 2014.

In his spare time, Mark likes to photograph triathlons and half marathons, offering the athletes images that are a little different from standard race photography by showing some of the landscape in which they are competing.
