Electron microscopy

Electron microscopes use a beam of electrons rather than a beam of light to generate images from their subjects. There are two types: the scanning electron microscope bounces electrons off the surface of a solid sample to provide surface structure information, and the transmission electron microscope passes electrons through a thin section to gather information on internal structures.
