Annie Cavanagh and David McCarthy

Annie and David from the School of Pharmacy, University of London, have been producing wonderful images together for quite a few years. David has been a microscopist for 38 years (starting in July 1972) and set up the Electron Microscope Unit at the School in 1977. He has imaged numerous samples including cell cultures, crystals, most forms of drug delivery vehicle, liposomes, polymers and carbon nanotubes using a wide range of imaging techniques.

Annie is the multimedia unit manager at the School of Pharmacy. It is her brilliant colourisation that enhances David's black-and-white micrographs in a partnership that has won many awards. Annie says: "I think it is really important to express science for the public in an artistic fashion so that they relate to something that they think is beautiful as well as scientific." Such images can also be of tremendous value to scientists as well. "When you've got a graphic and you can actually see something three-dimensionally, it makes a big difference."
