Anne Weston

Anne works as an electron microscopist for Cancer Research UK's London Research Institute. She works with a variety of research groups, using techniques such as transmission electron microscopy and cryo-electron microscopy. "We have a number of projects going at any one time," she says. Working for a cancer charity, Anne normally concentrates on imaging various types of cancer cell - though, she explains, "We do have work experience pupils come to us on occasion and we look at cells and discuss the work we do. It's always interesting for them to get the chance to view something that is more 'everyday' and therefore something that they can more easily relate to and get an idea of the scale of magnification - hopefully, leaving them with an interest in an area of science that they may not have previously considered." In addition to taking pictures, Anne also colour-enhances many of the images herself. However, it is the preparation of the samples and the capturing of the images that she enjoys the most. "I think I enjoy taking the pictures more because you never know what you are going to find."
